FREE PLAY – Let your child explore, discover and generally play without restriction. This free play can later be directed.
VISUAL TRACKING – Follow the path of wires visually without moving any beads. Trace the shape of the wires with your fingers in the air. Where will this wire end? Where is the round red bead going?
COLOUR, SIZE & SHAPE RECOGNITION – Touch the largest bead on your coaster. What shape is it? What colour is the smallest bead? Recognise shapes, colour and sizes that are the same or different.
3D LEARNING – Play follow the leader with a row of beads, naming the directions as you go. (Over, Up, Through, Away From, Middle, Between, Around, Behind, Long, Short, Top, Bottom).
LISTENING TO DIRECTION – Put three beads on the lowest wire and two beads on the highest wire. Move a green bead as high as you can.
COUNTING – How many beads are on each wire? How many beads are there all together?
HAND & EYE COORDINATION – A row of beads looks like a train on a railroad track. Push the train up to the mountain, through a tunnel, to the end of the line and back to the station again.
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
a. Discuss the frame in general. What does it look like?
b. Talk about colour, shape of wire, shape of beads.
c. Following directions. Allow children to give each other directions on the frame. “Show me the red beads.”
d. Discuss the sound of falling beads. Tap different wires and listen to the different sounds.
BODY AWARENESS & MOTOR SKILLS – Allow one hand to take over from the other hand and encourage two-handed play. Work with eyes open, work with eyes closed. Body parts suggested for use in moving the beads are fingers, hand, wrists, toes and feet. Always use language concepts in conjunction with physical activities.
